Solid red oak, 6 inches wide and 3/4 inch thick, milled tongue and groove on all four sides and kiln dried before it ships.

Red oak reads warmer than white oak — a pink to russet cast rather than tan — and its grain is more open, so the pores show plainly and the figure is busier. It takes stain readily, which is why it has been the default American floor for generations. Being open-pored it is less suited to wet rooms than white oak.

Plain sawn through the log, which gives the cathedral arches most people picture when they picture oak. It is the most economical way to buy white oak and the reason it has floored American houses for a century.

#2 Common is the rustic end of the range: heavy character, wide colour swing, and the most forgiving grade to install in a busy room.

It ships unfinished, so the stain and sheen are decided on site after the floor is down and sanded — the only way to match an existing floor exactly.

Each box covers 21 square feet.

Nail or staple down over an approved wood subfloor. Solid wood is not rated for below-grade installation.
