Quarter Sawn vs. Rift Sawn vs. Plain Sawn
Producing quarter-sawn and rift-sawn styles requires greater expertise, effort, and precision compared to traditional flat-sawn techniques. This additional effort increases production time and cost. Flat-sawn cuts are more efficient because nearly every piece of lumber can be utilized. In contrast, quarter-sawn production generates more waste, while rift-sawn techniques produce the most scrap due to the specific angles required to achieve the desired wood grain. As a result, rift-sawn wood is the most expensive of the three styles, reflecting the intricate cutting process and the larger volume of lumber needed to produce an equivalent amount of flooring.
